Heavy Equipment Mechanic position is for a mid to senior level mechanic with significant diesel engine, truck, and construction heavy equipment repair and maintenance experience. This position provides the opportunity for limited on the job training. It is targeted more for motivated self-learners with strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and direct other mechanics. The position requires work inside the Equipment Shop and outside in all forms of weather. The position reports to the Equipment Shop Manager and is designated as a senior lead mechanic position. The ideal candidate for this position will be energetic, situationally aware, and knowledgeable with 10-20 years of experience working in a heavy equipment or diesel truck repair and maintenance environment. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of heavy equipment repair and maintenance procedures for all make and brands of construction equipment. Experience in repair and maintenance of Mack Trucks is preferred. Extensive knowledge and experience with hydraulics, welding, electric, automotive brakes, gasoline and diesel engine principles, engine carburation, small engine operation, principles of shop maintenance equipment service functions are essential.


  • Performs work outlined on work orders with efficiency/accuracy, in accordance with OEM factory, OSHA safety, and company standards.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain all heavy equipment, light equipment, and truck automotive systems in the WC Spratt Inc. company fleet.
  • Plan and execute major repairs and maintenance service projects as required, to include engine and transmission replacements.
  • Maintain qualifications for inspection and repair sign-off on commercial truck fleet, to include air brake inspections.
  • Must be able to manage, communicate and work independently and effectively in a team environment.
  • Must communicate well with the Equipment Manager and advise on work to be performed.
  • Must accurately document and close-out all work performed using B2W Equipment Maintenance and Work Order database.
  • Must be able to road test commercial vehicles as required.
  • Ensure shop work areas and maintenance trucks are safe, maintained, and clean.
  • Operate all Equipment Shop tools and equipment in a safe and professional manner.
  • Must have a complete set of tools for Heavy Equipment / Diesel Truck maintenance and repair.
  • Must be able to work in both shop and field repair conditions from assigned maintenance truck.
  • To bring and maintain required mechanic tools.


  • 10 years plus experience in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment, and heavy truck repair and maintenance.
  • Strong team leadership skills with ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Welding and cutting fabrication and repair skills.
  • Full knowledge of batteries and repair of electrical systems is required.
  • Ability to operate both standard and automatic trucks.
  • Valid CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days with good driving record.
  • Must be able to physically lift and carry 75 lbs.
  • Must pass mandatory drug screening.
  • Must pass hearing test.
  • Veteran preference will be considered.

Excavator Operator

Job Description

Spratt is searching for an experienced lead excavator operator for a pipe crew with minimum of three (3) years similar work experience for work within an hour of Fredericksburg, VA.

Successful candidate skills needed: Attention to detail, dig and operate by hand signals, read and understand stakes, knowledge of rigging, basic equipment knowledge, ability to carry a grade, ability to read blueprints and cutsheets, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to load trucks, knowledge of clearing, ability to clean tracks, knowledge of equipment, knowledge of cutting edge/teeth, ability to find equipment fluid locations, knowledge of load capacity safe operating range, knowledge of sloping/trenching, ability to dig inside a trench box, sit a trench box/steel plates, knowledge of safe rigging procedures, ability to follow verbal and hand signal directions, ability to pull grade and work around overhead and underground utilities safely.

Personal Qualities required include: Team player, dependable, ability to work under pressure, ability to follow direction, self-motivated and ready to work off the machine when needed.

Under general supervision, lays various types of pipe to place water lines, sanitary or storm sewers, and drains. Aligns and positions pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing. Checks slopes for conformance to requirements and specifications. Selects type and size of pipe and related material according to job specifications. Connects pipe pieces and seals joints. Cuts pipes to required length. Locates existing pipes needing repair or replacement. Taps and drills holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary line or devices. Secures pipes to structures with clamps, brackets, and hangers. Cuts, threads, hammers, and welds pipe to specifications using saws, pipe threaders, and benders. Inspects, examines, and tests installed systems and pipe lines using pressure hydrostatic testing, observation, or other testing methods. Measures and marks pipes for cutting and threading. Plans pipe, installation, or repair according to specifications. Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions.

Fluent in English, attention to detail, ability to direct Track Hoe Operators, ability to set up lazer, ability to read blueprints, ability to grade a ditch, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to direct a crew, valid driver’s license.
