Spratt, Inc. has immediate openings for Heavy Equipment Operators: Excavator, Fine Grade Dozer, Loader, and Skid Steer Operators needed for Commercial Site and/or Utility Work with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive site and/or utility construction experience for work within 35 miles of Fredericksburg, VA.

Under general supervision, lays various types of pipes to install water lines, sanitary sewer, and storm drains. Installs pipe laser and slope per plans and specifications. Selects type and size of pipe and related material according to job specifications. Connects pipe pieces and seals joints. Cuts pipes to required length. Locates existing pipes needing repair or replacement. Pothole existing utilities to prevent damage. Taps and drills holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary line or devices. Secures pipes to structures with clamps, brackets, and hangers. Inspects, examines, and tests installed systems and pipelines using pressure hydrostatic testing, observation, or other testing methods. Plans pipe, installation, or repair according to specifications. Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions.

Fluent in English, attention to detail, ability to direct Track Hoe Operators, ability to set up pipe laser, ability to read blueprints, ability to grade a ditch, ability to lift 50 lbs., ability to direct a crew, valid driver’s license.

W.C. Spratt Inc. seeks an experienced Fuel/Lube Truck Driver. Must have Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Hazardous Materials Endorsement (X) or (H) and Tanker Endorsement (N) to ensure our construction equipment is fueled and lubricated. Operational area for our jobsites are generally within Virginia and 35 air mile radius of Fredericksburg, Virginia. This position provides the opportunity for limited on the job training. It is targeted for capable and motivated self-learners with strong work ethic and ability for independent operation. The position requires work inside the equipment shop and outside at refueling stations and on construction jobsites in all type of weather. The position reports to the Equipment Shop Manager and is designated as a lead fuel/lube operational position. The ideal candidate for this position will be energetic, situationally aware, and knowledgeable with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a heavy equipment or truck refueling and lube maintenance environment. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of heavy equipment and truck lubrication and refueling. Extensive knowledge and experience with fuel types and safe fuel handling. They should have extensive knowledge of refueling / lube truck operation and maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform refueling, greasing, oil changing, and the checking of fluid levels on all heavy equipment, light equipment, and truck automotive systems at WC Spratt Inc.
  • Must be responsible, self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively in a team environment
  • Must communicate well with others and have accurate professional administrative documentation and record keeping skills for refueling, driving and maintenance operations.
  • Ensure fuel/lube trucks and tanks are inspected, safe, properly marked, and well maintained.
  • Operate all assigned equipment and tools in a safe and professional manner.
  • Inspect and replenish assigned fuel / lube truck after trips and submit required reports.
  • Read bill of lading and determine best safe jobsite re-fueling routes.
  • Follow all federal, state, and company safety rules and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Have and maintain a Class A or B CDL with X or H and N endorsements.
  • 5 years plus experience in heavy equipment and heavy truck refueling and preventive maintenance and a good driving record.
  • Strong team leadership skills with ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Truck automotive and heavy equipment mechanical skills are preferred.
  • Ability to operate both standard and automatic truck transmissions
  • Must be able to physically lift and carry 50 lbs. and pull-out hose reels for up to 150 feet up and down stairs and inclines.
  • Must be able to climb on, off, and under various pieces of equipment, and physically access all parts of equipment to perform job requirements
  • Must pass hearing test.
  • Veteran preference will be considered.

W.C. Spratt, Inc. has an immediate opening for Pipe Foreman with a minimum of 5 years of progressive utility construction experience for work within 35 miles of Fredericksburg, VA.

The successful candidate will manage a 5 to 7-person crew installing underground water, sanitary and storm drainage systems, plan and work safely in deep excavations with shoring systems, work around existing utilities, and install traffic control. Must have experience with dewatering, bypass pumping, wet utilities, heavy equipment, line alignment and leak testing, and knowledge of local specifications, materials, and methods.   The candidate must possess skills needed to operate pipe laser and to read and understand engineered drawings and effectively calculate, measure, and apply grade information. The candidate must also possess strong communication skills, be results oriented and be able to use a computer or other form of electronic device for daily record keeping. Confined Space, Competent Person, and OSHA-30 Hour training and certification are a plus.

W.C. Spratt Inc. seeks an experienced Tractor-Lowboy Truck Driver to move our heavy equipment to and from jobsites.   Driver must have Class “A” Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Hazardous Materials Endorsement (X) or (H) and Tanker Endorsement (N) to ensure all our equipment and fuel/water trucks can be moved and recovered to and from jobsites.  Operational area is within 35 air mile radius of 491 Central Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia, not crossing state lines.   This position provides the opportunity for limited on the job training.  This is not an entry level position.  We need an experienced lowboy driver with a strong work ethic and ability for independent operation.  The position requires tractor-trailer lowboy driving as well as work inside the equipment shop, outside in the equipment yard, and on construction jobsites in all type of weather.  The position reports to the Equipment Manager and is a key operational position.  The ideal candidate is energetic, situationally aware, safety oriented, and CDL knowledgeable and qualified.   A minimum of 2 years tractor-lowboy experience hauling heavy equipment or performing lowboy recovery operations is required.   Candidates should have extensive experience in safe loading, tie-down, and movement of equipment on lowboy trailers.  They should have extensive knowledge of Federal and State DOT regulations and restrictions on tractor-lowboy equipment operations, including move/route planning, and permitting for normal and oversized loads.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform safe and legal lowboy trailer loading, tie-down cargo/load securement, transportation, and unloading for all company fleet heavy equipment and truck systems.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with company requirements.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively in a team environment
  • Must communicate well with others and have accurate professional administrative skills for inspection and time sheet record keeping.
  • Ensure proper placarding and flagging when required for moves.
  • Ensure assigned lowboy tractor trailer is properly maintained and safe to operate.
  • Safely and professionally operate all company vehicles and equipment on the road or at jobsites.
  • Follow all federal, state, and company safety rules and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Have and maintain a Class A CDL with X or H and N endorsements.
  • 2 years plus experience in heavy equipment and truck transport.
  • Must have a clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate all fleet standard and automatic trucks.
  • Must be able to physically lift and carry tie-down chains and binders. Max lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb on, off, and under various pieces of equipment, and physically access all parts of equipment to perform job tie-down requirements, using steps and ladders.
  • Truck automotive and heavy equipment mechanical skills are desired.
  • Must be able to operate and load all equipment for transport in a safe professional manner.
  • Must be experienced with oversize/overweight load permitting.
  • Must be familiar with road and bridge restrictions and how to obtain current information to determine best safe legal equipment transport routes.
  • Must pass mandatory drug screening.
  • Must pass all access requirements for military and federal jobsites.
