FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 608 (Benchmark Road) in Spotsylvania County remains closed to through traffic as crews continue an emergency road repair to install three culverts underneath the road at Massaponax Creek and restore the road’s travel surface.

Work remains on schedule to re-open the road to traffic by the project completion date of Tuesday, June 5.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) closed the road in mid-February between Route 17 (Mills Drive) and Route 636 (Mine Road) for motorist safety after heavy rain caused the roadway over three drainage pipes to fail.

Project contractor W.C. Spratt has replaced the three existing culverts, each measuring 10 feet high by 12 feet wide. Crews are preparing the site for new asphalt pavement and installing updated structure railing and guardrail.

VDOT continues to encourage motorists to use the following posted detour route:

  • Route 2 (Tidewater Trail)
  • Route 17

Before the road closed to traffic in February, an average of 5,100 vehicles traveled Benchmark Road daily, according to a VDOT traffic count.
